Types of mouth guards

Stock mouth guards
– these prefabricated and ready to wear right away. They are found at sporting stores and department stores. There is very minimal adjustment possible to their fitment, and they do not offer a precise fit, leading to ineffective protection. They are not recommended.

Boil & bite mouthguards – similar to stock mouth guards but they offer a slightly better fit than stock mouth guards. They are softened by boiling them in hot water first. They are then placed in the mouth to be moulded against the teeth. Also found in sports stores and department stores.

Custom-made mouth guards – this type of mouth guard is custom-made in the dental office or a dental laboratory. A dental impression is taken of your mouth, which is used to create a mouth guard that offers a precise fit. A precisely fitting mouth guard offers the most protection and comfort during wear.

What is a night guard?

A night guard is an oral appliance that is used to prevent damage and wear to the teeth; that is caused by grinding or clenching. A night guard is made of acrylic material and is usually worn on the top teeth during sleep. Instead of teeth grinding against each other, causing premature wear, they rub against the acrylic night guard. If you wake up with frequent headaches or a sore jaw, you may be grinding or clenching your teeth, without realising it. Your dentist can identify the signs of constant grinding or clenching of the teeth and make custom-fitted night guard for you.
