What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics or orthodontic treatment is a branch of dentistry that focuses on the positioning of the teeth and jaws. The goal of orthodontics or orthodontic treatment is to ensure correct alignment of teeth and the jaw. Proper positioning of teeth and jaws results in increased function when talking and eating, along with an improved smile.
Why is orthodontic treatment necessary?
When teeth are misaligned, crowded or crooked, it is harder for them to be cleaned properly. Teeth may be so crowded that access to all surfaces of the teeth cannot be easily reached when brushing and flossing. When teeth are not adequately cleaned, gum disease or gingivitis can develop. Gum disease can cause swollen, bleeding gums and unpleasant breath. If gum disease if left untreated, it will progress to periodontal disease. Periodontal disease leads to gum loss and bone loss, which will eventually result in tooth loss. Misaligned teeth may also cause frequent headaches, jaw pain, shoulder, neck and back pain in some cases.
Orthodontic treatment can alleviate all of these issues and provide increased self-confidence due to an improved and enhanced smile.
Invisalign orthodontic treatment
At College Dufferin Dental Clinic, we are excited to offer Invisalign orthodontic treatment. Invisalign provides fantastic results without all of the disadvantages of traditional metal braces.
Invisalign works by straightening your teeth through the use of custom-made aligners trays that are created for your mouth. The soft plastic aligner trays are smooth, comfortable to wear and almost invisible when worn over your teeth. They work by gently shifting your teeth into place over time. You just wear your new set of clear aligner trays every two weeks, until your teeth are perfectly aligned!
There are never any metal wires or brackets attached to your teeth. You are also able to remove the aligner trays during meals, so there are no food restrictions. With traditional metal braces, certain foods are not allowed during your treatment. Many patients can straighten their teeth and improve their smile effortlessly, without anyone knowing.
